out of 5 stars Changed my life, 12 August, 2001
A reader from Ireland
I read this book 10 years ago and it changed my life. I am one of those sickening people who is thin whatever I eat and only went on this diet because the other person in the house did so. But I felt so much better: had a health appitite, didn't suffer those sugar highs and lows - that I have loosely followed the diet ever since.

out of 5 stars brilliantly simple - no hocus pocus, 10 June, 2001
A reader from London
It explains how and why we should eat in a certain way - and backs it up with solid scientific fact. I have both lost fat and improved my energy levels by following the basic principals outlined in the book . Its a life style solution rather than a dieting book. A MUST READ.

out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous, 22 May, 2001
Reviewer: A reader from Holland

A friend of mine recommended the book and I have to admit, I was a bit put off with the title but after reading the first chapter, I started to enjoy reading it. It's very easy, self explanatory and even fun to read this book. I managed to loose a substantial amount of weight even though I wasn't determined to loose lots of weight, no, I wanted to know how to eat properly and to learn to eat healthy and to keep it up. It's been 5 weeks now and I feel great, a lot happier and more alert. Many of my friends have asked about this book and have equally been enthusiastic about it. Don't hesitate to buy this book.

out of 5 stars At last, a breath of fresh air... on a tired old subject!, 25 April, 2001
A reader from London

I first encountered Gillian's book when I participated in her course of the same name about two years ago now. I think I thought then that I knew it all. How wrong I was! Gillian's methods are such a relief and make such common sense. Taking the emotions, the angst and the stress out of the whole eating and dieting game, she quietly but surely helps you to navigate your way through the whole food addiction maze and gives you real tools, with which to free yourself. Two years down the line, I still re-read the book from time to time, and still benefit from what it has to say. And my own eating patterns? Let's just say that, with a lot of patience and even more practice, her philosphy has helped me discover a far, far healthier relationship with my food and with my eating. Oh, and yes I have lost a significant amount of weight 'effortlessly' (ie without dieting) over this time as well. Actually, about three dress sizes worth... This is no quick fix, fad or diet book. And perhaps if you can combine reading the book with doing one of her great courses, you might get the extra push needed to make those necessarily deep-rooted changes. But even on its own, I would unreservedly recommend this book to you. If you are really serious about making changes, about re-evaluating your life's priorities and about stopping food from ruling your life, buy this book and study it. It's not an easy road, but -take it from me- if you stick with it and take its message to heart, you too will find it changes your life. It has mine that's for sure.

out of 5 stars The only book that has something new to say about overeating, 18 March, 2000
A reader from London, England

Riley has written a book for anyone whose relationship to food is the source of anxiety, pain, social discomfort, guilt, recrimination, and cycles of promises made and promises broken. The book is not only for the overweight, but for anyone who feels out of control around food, anyone whose eating makes him or her unhappy. I have not lost weight using this unique book -- I didn't need or want to -- but I have found peace with food. Riley's approach ignores all the women's magazine diet nonsense, as well as the feminist psychology about the meaning of food, cooking, eating, and fat, and gets straight to the point: Are you willing to take responsibility for what you eat? If you are, she offers the tools to help you do it. She explains exactly how to do it, in psychological and practical terms.

It is the ONLY book I have seen with something new to say about eating and eating disorders. Compulsive eating --- however you define it --- is in my experience the most common of eating disorders, afflicting more 'normal' men and women more often than anorexia or bulimia. You may eat standing up, you may eat the children's food, you may eat out of the tin, you may eat all carrots for lunch, you may hve a glass of wine rather than eat, you may eat in the middle of the night, you may swear to yourself you won't eat anymore or won't finish the lot or won't buy it at all. Whatever you do with food that makes you unhappy, Eating Less can help you resolve and, of course, stop doing.

The book is not about women and food --- a favourite and hardly illegitimate subject in this genre. It is about and for anyone --- man, woman, fat, thin, happy, sad, successful or no -- who would like to feel better about the way he or she eats.

The book --- and the course the author gives --- changed my life. It is not a quick fix, but it is a lasting one.

There are no fads or magic wands in this book: just straight, can't-argue reality, and lots and lots of help to do whatever you have been trying --- and failing --- to do about your eating.

out of 5 stars Well worth the money spent on the book., 1 March, 2001
A reader from Australia

I've been a yo-yo with weight gain all my life and think this diet is the one to fix it. I'm a sceptical person by nature, and the family baulked at being dragged along with me, but we're all feeling better. My normally morose husband is actually smiling and cracking the odd joke, and my 10 year old son (who adheres only at tea time really) has lost the dark circles under his eyes. We've all lost weight. I feel heaps better, no headaches, heartburn, insomnia, loads more energy and less aches and pains. A friend with chronic bronchitis and a diabetic has also been on it and her health has improved so dramatically it's almost a miracle. 1st three weeks are a bit drastic, but well worth sticking to it, I don't think anyone loses. I also appreciate the recipes, which are simple, relatively cheap, very tasty and quick to make as I hate cooking.

out of 5 stars You have loads of energy and feel so healthy using this book, 18 November, 2000
A reader from An Aussie living in Manchester
This book was amazing. It really works. After doing the liver cleansing diet a while ago, which was not so easy missing out on eating no meat or chicken for 4 weeks, but it really helps to clean you out. I never had so much energy. I felt so good. I lost weight and did not get any migraines. I still keep to the 12 liver principles now and have included the liver diet receipies in my daily lifestyle. They are delicious. The best long term plan for healthy eating and feeling good.

out of 5 stars Great diet for any skin condition especially eczema and acne, 23 June, 2000
A reader from New Zealand

This diet is life saving. I had a pimples all over my face (acne rosacia) for sometime now and a redness that made me look like a beetroot. Rosacia is supposed to be chronic and there is no way of getting rid of it. Well, there is good news. Yes, you can get rid of it together with headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome, excess weight loss is bonus... and a number of other ailments. Thanks Dr Cabot

out of 5 stars Very beneficial to everyone., 17 May, 2000
A reader from Devon, UK

I bought this book in Melbourne, Australia and since moving to the UK, I couldn't live without it. I had to get my mum to send it over. This liver cleansing diet (LCD) by Susan Cabot is without a doubt the best thing to get your body back into gear. I felt the effects of the LCD a year after doing it. The LCD helps get your metabolism regulated so there is no need to yo-yo diet again. There are heaps of other benefits aswell, I definately recommend this book to everyone. People are usually turned off by the cost of spending extra on foods for special diets. Our weekly food bill has decreased since starting this diet. I am doing it a second time and even when I am not on the LCD, I still use the recipes as they are creative, healthy and tasty.
